Template:Infobox character Hodaka Morishima (森嶋 帆高 Morishima Hodaka?) is the male protagonist of Tenki no Ko.

Background

Hodaka Morishima was born in between September 2004 and May 2005 to the upper-middle class/lower-upper class family on a detached island located in Japan (presumably Kozushima). His relationship with his father was strained; he physically abused him and controlled his actions and he felt he was "chained down" by his school. On the summer of his first year of high school, Hodaka decided to run away to Tokyo. However, he found himself living his life as a NEET against the high living cost in Tokyo, and soon became broke and fell into isolation, also known as hikikomori. However, he finally managed to get a job as a writer in a shady and small Monthly Paranormal Occult Editorial. After becoming a journalist, Hodaka was sent in a task to investigate the irregular weather in Japan. One day, in a corner of the crowded and busy Tokyo metropolitan, Hodaka met a young bright and strong-willed girl named Hina Amano, who can manipulate the weather through her prayer, and then begins exploring the undiscovered truth of the world with her.

Appearance

Hodaka is a teenager of average build and height with tan skin and large light brown eyes. He has short, slightly messy black hair with soft forelocks and bangs that hang over his eyes. He wears either a white or black plain short sleeved t-shirt, four-quarter rare-folded jeans, pair of white sneakers with two red stripes, and he carries around a small, yellow messenger shoulder-type backpack with him.

Personality

Hodaka was a meek person before meeting Hina, due to the troubled life he was suffering from by his father and his school. He had convinced himself that running away to Tokyo was the only way to escape from the small town mindset of the island he did not like. This is just one of a myriad of reasons for him leaving his home, among them being boredom, seeking the thrill of adventure and even escaping his abusive father. This abuse (as mentioned in the light novel) may be the reason he negatively talks about home, let alone wanting to return. Hodaka is also a courageous boy. He is impulsive and irrational, which plays a contributing factor that seals the ultimate fate of Tokyo.

Relationships

Hina Amano

Ever since Hodaka saves Hina from the club owners and Hina reveals her power to clear the sky, he starts to develop romantic feelings for her. Inspired by the legend of the weather maiden, Hodaka proposes to start a business with Hina by clearing the weather for events such as weddings and parties which later becomes a success. After the fireworks festival, Hodaka began to realize that using the power to change the weather is taking a toll on Hina, so he decides to go on hiatus with fulfilling Keisuke's request for one sunny day to spend with his daughter Moka as their last job. Soon after, the police arrive at the apartment where Hina lives with her younger brother Nagi and interrogate her; Hina realizes that because they have no legal guardians, with their mother having died recently, social services is going to take them into their custody and Hodaka is asked by Keisuke to return home. Hodaka and Hina then decides to run away together with Nagi, but they are halted by a heavy rainstorm and falling snows. After a long search for hotels and accommodation, they finally found a luxurious hotel to stay for the night. Hina then proceeded to ask Hodaka whether he wants the rain to disappear or not, Hodaka carelessly responded yes without knowing the implications to Hina. Hina reveals that she is the cause of the abnormal weather and her body is slowly turning into water, intending to be a human sacrifice for the weather will go back to normal. Crying uncontrollably, Hodaka promises to protect her. It is very likely that because of the pain he suffered at his father's hands, Hodaka also saw her as the only sunshine that he ever had in his life. The next morning, after finding out that Hina disappeared and the weather returns to normal, Hodaka, having already fallen in love with Hina, decides to bring her back to Earth. With the help of Keisuke, Natsumi, and Nagi, Hodaka was able to evade the police, jumps through the shrine gate, and is transported into the sky, where he finds Hina and asks her to leave with him together. Despite being worried about the weather afterword, Hina was deeply touched when Hodaka confesses his feelings for her, saying that he wants her more than the blue sky. As they fall to Earth together, Hodaka asks Hina to let it go and start living for herself; upon descending to the rooftop shrine, the heavy rains resume but Hodaka is forced to return to his island home by the police, After finishing his probation three years later, Hodaka graduates from high school and returns to Tokyo where he tearfully finds Hina praying on a street overlooking the drowned city. Being both shocked and overjoyed to see each other again, they embrace each other once more and the film ends with Hodaka promising Hina that they will be fine from now on.

Nagi Amano

Hodaka is also something of an older brother figure to Nagi and Nagi looks up to him as a father as well. Hodaka listens carefully to Nagi's advice what gifts he should give to Hina and the younger even helps the older escape from the police when Hina is being sacrificed.

Keisuke Suga

On his way to Tokyo, Hodaka was on the boat and was about to fall off the boat due to a short, heavy rain. In that very second, that is when Hodaka met Keisuke as Keisuke saved him from slipping off. Because of how horrible and abusive his father is, Hodaka looks up to his own boss as a father figure and a mentor.

Mr. and Mrs. Morishima

Nothing much is known about Hodaka's relationship with his parents in the film, although the light novelization reveals that his father physically and emotionally abused him for an uncounted number of times. Hodaka even mentions that he felt "chained down" by his dad, implying that he was also strict, domineering and controlling towards him. Because of this, he finds a better father figure in the form of Keisuke Suga, his own boss. However, when Hodaka returned to Kozushima after saving Hina's life, he described his parents welcoming him back as “awkwardly, but warmly”. It is very likely that his mother and father redeemed themselves during his absence. Nothing much is said about his mother, although she may not be as bad her husband, since Hodaka writes a letter to her in the beginning of the manga adaptation.

Etymology
